Uber Strategy: Go Anywhere, Get Anything

Greylock recently kicked off “Iconversations,” a new speaker series featuring “icons” across tech, finance, media and culture. We were thrilled to welcome Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as our first guest to the virtual event. Khosrowshahi, who previously served as CEO of Expedia before taking the reins at Uber in 2017, sat down with Greylock general partner Reid Hoffman to discuss the past, present and future of the mobility and delivery business that now operates in 71 countries around the world and employs around 20,000 people globally. He also shared his perspective on M&A (including Uber’s recent acquisitions of Postmates and Drizly), autonomous vehicles, the complexities of working in highly regulated industries, and how his personal and professional background shaped the way he approaches leadership today. GoFundMe CEO: “Hello Congress, Americans need help and we can’t do your job for you.”

GoFundMe helps people pay their rent and medical bills. It’s chief executive, Tim Cadogan, says it was never meant to be a social safety net. Tim said so directly in his op-ed in USA Today. And on this week’s episode of “Sway,” Kara Swisher asks him what GoFundMe’s data reveals about gaps in America’s social safety net and how he thinks about content moderation when it’s money, and not just ideas, in play. They also discuss the platform’s controversial campaigns — from Gorilla Glue Girl to Steve Bannon to people who sought funds to travel to the Jan. 6 Trump rally in Washington.
